George Whitfield Jack papers, 1882-1933.

This collection consists of handwritten and typed personal and professional correspondence, newspaper clippings, a wedding announcement, family papers, obituaries and other biographical information, photographs and poems. The bulk of the correspondence is between G. W. Jack and Edwin L. Stephens, the first president of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, later known as University of Southwestern Louisiana, in Lafayette, La. Judge Jack wrote in a casual, often humorous style.

George Whitfield Jack (1875-1924) was born in Natchitoches, La., the son of Col. William Houston Jack and Mary Catherine Whitfield. Graduating from Tulane University Law School in 1898, he began law practice in Shreveport. He was appointed to his position of United States District Judge, Western District of Louisiana, by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917. Edwin Lewis Stephens was a Louisiana educator and university administrator. He held teaching positions at Northwestern State College of Louisiana in Natchitoches, La., and at other Louisiana institutions before becoming the first president of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute in Lafayette, La.
